This is the manifestation of wanting a toy, or trophy, or an outlet for your insecurities rather than a child.

CBC had a news story of a Rabbi who has come to Canada and is being sought by the Israeli police. He commanded a woman to systematically torture her daughter including locking her in a suit case for days, to eat feces, and of course to be beaten… to the point of putting her in a coma. But what else is a woman to do when she thinks that her kid is possessed. I guess a coma is God’s way of showing you the demon has been purged

I’m not sure whether that particular religious fever is as tightly tied to this insecurity as your comment would suggest; I tend to ascribe religious sentiment of that kind to a pathetic failure to interact with the real world, since I’m sure that the rabbi doesn’t suffer from insecurities of this kind — he’s just a sociopath.
