I did, however, oversleep a bit this morning. I blame the fact that I’ve not topped 6 hours of sleep in any night for around a month, which is probably not doing my body any good whatsoever.

In other news, Mother’s day is coming, and I’m pretty stoked: I remembered!

Squash is responsible for a sore forearm and back, biking for sore legs, and disc golf for a sore shoulder. My mind is awash with details I never knew about good friends and family, which is great — I’m going to get Char to forward me the emails that she assembled into the fantastic party game that we played, and I intend to read over them all.

Thank you all so very much, those of you who were able to come out last night. I had a great time, and it was arguably the best birthday e-var!1!!bang

Oh, the details were mostly good. I had a good trip with Char, during which she either slept or was happy to chat with me continuously about a whole host of interesting things (PolySci == good conversation). However, the details — from some social awkwardness at the wedding itself (on my part, sadly) to some bad news from home (ask Char; it’s her story to tell) meant that the trip turned out to be less happy than I’d hoped.

I wish it had been more cheery, but I suppose I still enjoyed the trip; the company was excellent, and even if the details were bad it doesn’t mean that there was no value in it.

• One, there’s a ski trip happening in a few days, on the 22nd, with much of my family that will be very fun (good idea, Char!).
• Two, Christmas. I’m short on gift ideas, so suggestions — to the extent that I’m getting gifts outside the family — are welcome. A particularly good suggestion might net you some swag, anyway. And yes, dear, I know what you want
• Three, school is done for the year tomorrow morning.
• Four, we’re about ready to release version 4.0.0 of our flagship product

It’s a busy, busy week.

And a long-held wish to see the Oilers play a Stanley Cup finals game.

For specifics, well, I think that the best sum-up of my relationship with my father is the thing he said to me about living with Char and I for half a year: It’s nice that we get to experience living together as adults and equals, and thus get to know each other better than otherwise we would.

Which is, given my antipathy to the place, fairly peculiar in and of itself.

Anyway, Just a post to keep people aware that no, i’m not dead.

And yes, my dad is doing fine.

About 2:30 this morning, my dad had a heart attack.

I’m kind of at a loss on this one. I guess first thing, it’s not as bad as one would think. Which is still pretty fucking bad. He’s okay, but they had to pop open a vein in his heart, put a stent in, and tomorrow they’ll be assessing the damage.

It’s scary, really scary. This is my DAD. He’s not supposed to be, well, vulnerable… But all those IV tubes, all that … vulnerability. It’s really hitting me. Time is ticking onwards, and…

Fuck, i just don’t know. I don’t even know how to feel about this. I think, maybe, I’ll just let this one sit until i know more.

Scary thought, this, although Char is going out today with my mother to brave the hells that are malls and big-box stores in order to… You know what, i’m not even sure what they’re after.

At any rate, that’s their lookout. Here’s the rundown on the week so far:

Monday, we gorged ourselves on the rarest, bloodiest tenderloin steaks i’ve ever had. I could cut the blinkin’ things with the dull side of the knife. That, and they were so rare they might as well have been sushi. Good stuff

Tuesday was gorgery, pool, beer, and hanging out with a rarely-seen good friend. And Guiness.

Wednesday — Christmas eve, for the date-impaired — was spent with again, more pool, some shopping, some cleaning, some cooking, and a 4.5-lb prime rib roast that was devoured in its entirety by 5 people. As though it was never there. Then, hm… I honestly don’t recall what we did next. I think it might have been something like “Drank some wine and fell asleep.”

Christmas day dawns, and we get to the swag. Gifts all around, although some highlights were: Char and Mom buying Char and I a digital camera. Char getting the complete Far Side collection from Dad. General gorgery on all our parts

Boxing day… Well, i’m not doing much of anything today, except getting the digital camera set up and figuring out how to post photos to the blog

Thanksgiving is the shit

The visit was nice. Grande Prairie never really gets any better for me, but it sure does get bigger. It’s still full of the same people as always, even though they often have different names and faces, and bigger trucks than before. It’s not really my favourite place. Can you tell?

Since i was only in town for a weekend, i didn’t really get hold of anyone outside the immediate family. So, if any reader is irked that i did not call them, um, well, i was sick (cough) and never really felt well enough to talk at all. And that’s no lie - i was laryngitic for most of the weekend.

Speaking of which… Colds suxor

Right now, though, i’m listening to some really nice neoclassical stuff that Sarah and Donald, the DJs at the club i work at, burned for me to check out. It’s pretty nice. Very easy to listen to, very pleasant.
